I know Bulgaria is not a top bucket list destination but there are plenty beautiful places to see such as: the Balchik Palace, the Kaliakra fortress, Buzludzha and Veliko Tarnovo. Situated in the heart of Bulgaria, Veliko Tarnovo used to be its capital city between 1185-1393. What fascinates me the most about this cute little town is its architecture. Judging by how the houses were built, one can say it looks a lot like Positano, Italy and I can’t argue with this. The only major difference between Positano and Veliko Tarnovo is that the first one is situated by the sea while the second one is surrounded by mountains. If you are looking for a relaxing getaway on a budget, Veliko Tarnovo is the place to be! Below are the reasons why I love so much this place:
It has stunning views!
If you are walking the main street – Stefan Stambolov you will stumble upon a few terraces with amazing panoramic views over the city. However, in my opinion, if you want to enjoy the best view in town, you must go to the Monument of the Asen Dynasty.
Great food at low prices
Every time I went out to grab a bite, I tried to eat in a different place and not once was I disappointed. I have been to: Sammy’s Bar, Restaurant Ego and Shtastlivetsa. The average price for a meal for one person, including drinks is 8-10 euros. You must also try the ice cream!
Handmade items at every step!
If you are looking for some artisan objects, you can choose from the many shops from Georgi S. Rakovski Street. Here you can find different objects ranging from pottery to clothes. Personally, I have fallen in love with these colorful plates. If you have the time, do not forget to visit the Tsaravets Fortress which is easily accessible by foot. The fortress is an important tourist attraction as it is very well preserved, dating from the XII century. Let me know if you have visited Veliko Tarnovo. I would love to hear your opinion about this city! Also, please ask any questions in the comments below. May the travel bug bite you!
