Tegal Wangi Beach Bali – a wonderful hidden gem

Bali, white sand, clear water, tall cliffs, no tourists – sounds like a dream, right? Well, it’s about to come true. If you have ever dreamed about a secluded beach with breathtaking seascapes that you can have all for yourself, you are in the right place.

Tegal Wangi Beach is situated on the Western side of Bukit Peninsula and it has entered my top 3 all time favorite beaches. I’m going to tell you why.

Why should you visit the Tegal Wangi Beach?

With so many tourists in Bali it’s really hard to find a place to enjoy by yourself. I love going to the beach but sometimes all the music and chaos won’t let me really enjoy the nature. This is why I have been searching around Bali for hidden beaches where I can feel connected with everything around me while still enjoying the beautiful scenery.

Tegal Wangi Beach was everything I have ever hoped for! This little stretch of coast offers some amazing natural pools, beautiful cliffs and turquoise water.

The beach is only about 250 meters long but you know what they say – ‘good things come in small packages’. Don’t be surprised if during your visit you will see the airplanes landing on Ngurah Rai International Airport. It is just another perk of visiting this beach.

Chilling in the natural pools is a great experience. However, if you are planning to swim in the sea, you should be extra careful. There are many stones on the bottom and the undercurrents are pretty strong. Also, there are no lifeguards but with a little caution you will be fine.

The Tegal Wangi Beach is perfect for sun bathing. The white sand is soft and clean, perfect to lay down. The only thing I would recommend would be to lay your towel down towards the cliffs since from time to time the waves will cover a big portion of the beach.

If you want to sit in the shade, don’t worry. There are plenty of places to hide from the sun: below the cliffs or near the big rocks on the beach.

If during the day chances are you won’t find anyone on the beach, at sunset things are a bit different. Although the Tegal Wangi Beach is not yet popular among tourists, it is the locals’ favorite spot for sunsets.

The best time to go and see the sunset is between 6 pm and 7 pm when the sky turns to orange. Bring a blanket with you and enjoy! Watching the sun set into the ocean is one of the most romantic views you can get in Bali! Also, don’t forget your camera home; you can take some spectacular photos!

Things to keep in mind:

  • After finding out about this beautiful, hidden beach you would think that you will have to pay an entrance fee in order to get to it. The good news is that the parking and entrance fee to Tegal Wangi Beach are free.
  • Also, the beach is open 24/ 7. This means that you can go anytime you want and stay as long as you want. Nobody will bother you. However, if you are going for the first time, I would recommend going during the day. In order to reach the beach you will have to walk on the edge of cliffs for a few meters and it can get dangerous during the night. If you really want to go when it’s dark outside, at least bring a flashlight with you!

How to get to Tegal Wangi Beach

I definitely recommend renting a motorbike to get to the Tegal Wangi beach. You can rent one with about 50,000 IDR – 60,000 IDR a day.

Walking there is not really an option as the beach is quite far from the main attractions in Bukit Peninsula. Also, going by taxi would be quite difficult since you would have to talk to the driver to wait for you. You won’t find any taxis there to go back to the city.

If you are using Google Maps, the app will take you straight to the parking lot. If it is easier for you, you can search for Ayana Resort. Once you reach it, you will have to turn right and continue along the road until the end of it. The beach is easily accessible by motorbike and the road is good with small bumpy sections.

The parking lot will look like a dead end. To reach the beach, you will have to follow the path on the left side of the parking until you will reach the viewpoint over the beach (photo below). Once you get there take a break, enjoy the view and continue along the path until you will some stairs. These stairs will take you straight to the beach.
