Independence Hotel Sihanoukville Review – trying the pods

Entering the Independence Hotel Sihanoukville estate is a different experience from any other hotel I have stayed at until now. The Independence is more than a hotel, it is a place where you will be surrounded by dense tropical vegetation, where you can take a quiet walk along the alleys while discovering the hotel’s beautiful architecture. With its own beach, the Independence hotel is exactly what you need if you are searching for luxury combined with tranquility.

1. History

With a rich history, the Independence Hotel is considered the ‘Grande Dame’ of Cambodian hotels. The hotel was firstly opened in 1964 and its name is a symbol of the Cambodia’s independence from France. Once with the Khmer Rouge regime, the hotel was closed. However, in 2007 the hotel was brought back to its former glory and it now stands tall and watches over the Independence beach.

Over the time, the hotel has received many prestigious guests, one of them being Jacqueline Kennedy. If you want to live a piece of the hotel’s history you can book the Jacqueline Kennedy Suite.

2. New Concept – Pods

The Independence Hotel has many options of accommodation to choose from, suitable for all tastes: deluxe rooms, suites, villas, studios and pods.

I had the pleasure to try the new Independence Hotel pods. They are located in the middle of nature, in a separate area but with full access to all the hotel’s facilities. The pods are built from wood, matching their surroundings. I loved the fresh smell of wood and their smart design. Even though the pods look quite small, you still have all the comfort of a normal hotel room but in the middle of nature. The rooms have TV, air conditioning, a table, chairs and a fully equipped private bathroom.

Since the Independence Hotel estate is quite big, you will have a golf cart at your disposal and a driver to get around.

3. Breakfast

Everybody wants a room with a view but what about a breakfast with a view? You can enjoy an amazing breakfast with a breathtaking view at the Sunset Restaurant. The dishes are tasty, varied and the staff will make sure that you will have a great time.

4. Pools

I must admit, I have a thing for beautiful pools and the Independence Hotel has two of them! You can choose between the Patio Pool, near the reception or the Ocean Infinity Pool. The most impressive one is by far the Ocean Infinity Pool. I loved all the layers of water and the sea view. This is the perfect place to forget about all the worries and enjoy the moment.

5. Staff

From the moment you will enter the hotel, you will be welcomed by the friendly staff with a drink and a cold wet towel – just perfect for hot days. If you need to book a taxi or maybe you want to get the free shuttle to the city, do not hesitate to call the reception.
