When I think about Hong Kong, I remember its tall skyscrapers, in different shapes and colors. I’ve been to many big cities around Asia such as Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul, and Kuala Lumpur but none offers such beautiful views as Hong Kong.
With tall buildings, incredible mountains and countless islands, the views over Hong Kong are one of a kind. Many tourists who visit it are looking for amazing lookout points but sometimes, to get the perfect view, you have to travel off the beaten path.
Are you searching for the best viewpoint in Hong Kong? You are in the right place!
Apart from offering the best views over the impressive skyscrapers in Hong Kong, Lugard Road is also free to visit.

Lugard Road or Victoria Peak
Victoria Peak is definitely one of the most popular tourist attractions in Hong Kong alongside Disneyland and Ngong Ping 360. Hundreds of tourists come here every night to see the sunset. It’s busy, popular but this is definitely not the best lookout point in Hong Kong.
If you are curious to see what the view looks like from Victoria Peak, please see the photo below.
If you really want to experience the best view over Hong Kong’s skyline, take a short walk from Victoria Peak to Lugard Road. The picture below is taken from the free Lugard Road observation deck. Quite a difference, right?
Lugard Road viewpoint
Lugard Road is not actually a road for cars but rather a pedestrian path which makes its way through the thick Hong Kong forest. Located at about 400 meters above the sea level, this road offers the best views over the Victoria Harbor.
No time to read now? Pin it for later!
The path is 2.4 kilometer-long but talking a walk on Lugard Road is the most relaxing and rewarding thing you can do. Although most of the times you won’t be able to see the city due to the thick forest, from time to time the tall skyscrapers will reveal themselves in a spectacle of shapes and colors.

If you’d prefer to get directly to best viewpoint on Lugard Road, head to “Lugard Road Lookout” (you can search for it on Google Maps). It took us a while to find it since we didn’t use Google Maps but as long as you’re using the app, you’ll be there in no time.
The Lugard Road Lookout has an opening of about 8 meters. It might seem like a lot but during the sunrise and sunset, it can get pretty busy. However, it will never be as busy as the Victoria Peak.
Lugard Road entrance fee: $0
When to go to Lugard Road
If you are a photographer or just want to enjoy Lugard Road view, I recommend going during the sunrise or sunset/ night. Personally, I’m not a morning person and I’m fascinated by the city lights during the night so I’d prefer going at sunset.
However, if you want to have the place for yourself, definitely go for the sunrise. There are not that many early birds around the Lugard Road Lookout at 7 am.
For reference, below are two pictures – the first one is taken at sunrise, the second one is taken at sunset. Both views are breathtaking.
Other awesome things to do in Hong Kong:
- Have fun at Disneyland
- Visit the famous colorful basketball court
- Cruise the Victoria Harbour
- Visit Lantau Island’s famous attractions
How to get to Lugard Road
Getting to Lugard Road is easy. There are transportation options for every budget. First, you’ll have to get to Victoria Peak and then, after a few minutes of walking you will reach Lugard Road.
1. Lugard Road by tram
Take the Victoria Peak tram which is one of the oldest funicular trains in the world. As you will make your way to the top in this beautiful train, you will pass right by the tall apartment buildings.
Riding The Peak Tram is an experience itself and I totally recommend it to anyone who visits Hong Kong.
Price: HK$ 52 return ticket
Waiting time: 30 minutes – 1 hour, depending when you’re visiting. If you’re going during the sunset, expect to wait around one hour.
2. Lugard Road by bus
You can also take the bus number 15 from Central Pier 8 but the ride will take about one hour and fifteen minutes.
3. Lugard Road by taxi
You can take a taxi to the peak from anywhere around the city. I recommend using the Grab App which is the Asian version of Uber. Just enter your destination in the app (Victoria Peak) and wait for your driver to arrive.
